Project Description
Not Just a Sculpture is an interactive light installation that responds to the persistent objectification of women represented in sculptural form. Across the world, bronze statues bear the visible traces of being repeatedly touched and groped, their breasts polished and worn down by countless hands. These acts are often dismissed with the phrase, "it's just a statue".
By making the sculpture reactive, the viewer questions their relationship to it. Is it just a sculpture that can be touched without consequence, or does it represent something more? A light beams onto the statue, tracking your movement, is it watching you? If you are to touch her, be warned.

Technical Description
Hand-moulded aluminium mesh bust on a laser-cut plywood base (painted black). Ultrasonic sensor mounted onto servo motor for sensing angle and distance of viewer. LED lights soldered and built onto laser-cut mount structure. Arduino used for handling sensor input and mapping LED lights. MPR121 sensor used for sensing if sculpture is touched, which triggers LED light response.
